Marriage vows

Example Traditional Religious Vow #1

The bridegroom takes the bride's right hand in his, and says

I, [your groom's name] , take you, [your name] ,
to be my wife,
to have and to hold
from this day forward;
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
to love and to cherish,
till death us do part,
according to God's holy law.
In the presence of God I make this vow.
The bride and groom then loose hands and the bride takes her bridegroom's right hand in hers, and says
I, [your name] , take you, [your groom's name] ,
to be my husband,
to have and to hold
from this day forward;
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
to love, cherish, and obey,
till death us do part,
according to God's holy law.
In the presence of God I make this vow.

Example Traditional Religious Vow #2
The bridegroom now takes his bride's right hand in his,
and says
I, [name] , take thee, [name] ,
to my wedded wife,
to have and to hold from this day forward,
for better for worse, for richer for poorer,
in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish,
till death us do part, according to God's holy ordinance;
and thereto I plight thee my troth.

The bride takes the bridegroom's right hand in hers, and says:

I, [name] , take thee, [name],
to my wedded husband,
to have and to hold from this day forward,
for better for worse,
for richer for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
to love, cherish,
and to obey,
till death us do part,
 according to God's holy ordinance;
 and thereto I give thee my troth.

Often the word 'obey' is omitted, as follows

I, [name] , take thee,
 [name], to my wedded husband,
to have and to hold from this day forward,
for better for worse,
for richer for poorer,
 in sickness and in health,
 to love and to cherish,
 till death us do part,
according to God's holy ordinance;
and thereto I give thee my troth.

Then the couple will exchange more vows as they receive and give the rings:

With my body I honour you,
all that I am I give to you,
and all that I have I share with you,
within the love of God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
